A
At the age of six, my father brought home a dog one day, who was called Lucy. My brothers and I all loved Lucy and did different things with her. One of us would walk her, another would feed her, then there were baths, playing catch and many other games~ Lucy, in return, loved each and every one of us. One thing that most touched my heart was that she would go to whoever was sick and just be with them. We always felt better when she was around.
One day, as I was getting her food, she chewed up(咬破)one of Dad's shoes, which had to be thrown away in the end. I knew Dad would be mad and I had to let her know what she did was wrong. When I looked at her and said, "Bad girl," she looked down at the ground and then went and hid. I saw a tear in her eyes.
Lucy turned out to be more than just our family pet. She went everywhere with us. People would stop and ask if they could pet her. Of course she'd let anyone pet her. She was just the most lovable dog. There were many times when we'd be out walking and a small child would come over and pull on her hair. She never barked (吠)or tried to get away. Funny thing is she would smile. This frightened people because they thought she was showing her teeth. Far from the truth, she loved everyone .
Now many years have passed since Lucy died of old age. I still miss the days when she was with us.
21. What would Lucy do when someone was ill in the family?
A. Look at them sadly.
B. Play games with them.
C. Keep them company.
D. Touch them gently.
22. We can infer from Paragraph 2 that Lucy_____.
A. would eat anything when hungry
B. disliked the author's Dad
C. loved playing hide-and-seek
D. felt sorry for her mistake
23. Why does the author say that Lucy was more than just a family pet?
A. She was treated as a member of the family.
B. She played games with anyone she liked.
C. She went everywhere around the family
D. She was loved by everybody she met.
24. Some people got frightened by Lucy when she____
A. barked B. smiled C. rushed to them D. tried to be funny
B
Pure air is always needed for breathing. If we have pure air, our health improves. On the other hand, impure air causes diseases and harms our health and even causes our death. Smoke pollutes air, and it is the root of air pollution. The smoke which is discharged(排出) from industries, automobiles and kitchens is poisonous, which can cause lung cancer, tuberculosis(肺结核) and other diseases. One terrible incident was the Bhopal gas leak in India in December 1984. Thousands of residents of Bhopal died due to lung problems caused by methylamine(甲胺) gas from the Union Carbide Plant.
The water of rivers and sea is being constantly polluted all over the world by various types of dangerous chemical and biological waste. Factories discharge harmful waste water into many rivers and seas. The water of the River Ganges is extremely polluted and contains all sorts of dangerous bacteria(细菌). It is really very strange that a large number of the Indians regard this water as holy. They even drink this water for salvation(拯救).
If the air we breathe, the water we drink, the soil which produces our crops, vegetables and fruit all become more and more impure, our chances of good health ad longevity will be greatly reduced. Environmental pollution is a serious menace to our existence. Realizing the danger, we must plant a large number of trees to absorb impure air. Impure water from industries can be sent back for purification(净化) and then it can be used for irrigation(灌溉).
25. What does the underlined word“menace”in the last paragraph mean?
26. A. Loss B. Threat C. Puzzle D. Difficulty
26. Indians drink the water of Ganges because__________
A. the water is good for their health
B. they think the water is holy
C. there is a shortage of water in India
D. other rivers have been polluted
27. Why does the author give the Bhopal gas leak as an example?
A. To tell readers that methylamine gas can cause lung problems.
B. To prove that smoke from industries is poisonous.
C. To warn that Bhopal should not develop industries.
D. To show that air pollution is a big problem in people’s life.
28. What can we infer form the last paragraph?
A. Impure water can’t be used any more.
B. We should take pollution of the environment very seriously.
C. Our health and longevity will become worse of we don’t eat fruit.
D. Pollution of the environment has become out of control.
C
My friends and I spent a lot of time out in the woods in our childhood.“The woods” was our part-time address, destination, purpose, and excuse. If I went to a friends house and found him not at home, his mother might say, “Oh, he’s out in the woods, ” with a tone(语气) of airy acceptance. It is similar to the tone people sometimes use nowadays to tell me that someone I’m looking for is on the golf course or at the gym, or even “away from his desk.” For us ten-year-olds, “being out in the woods” was just an excuse to do whatever we feel like for a while.
We sometimes told ourselves that what we were doing in the woods was exploring (探索). Exploring was a more popular idea back then than it is today. History seemed to be mostly about explorers. Our explorations,
though, seemed to have less system than the historic kind: something usually came up along the way. Say we stayed in the woods, throwing rocks, shooting frogs, picking blackberries, digging in what we were briefly persuaded was an Italian burial mound.
Often we got "lost" and had to climb a tree to find out where we were. If you read a story in which someone does that successfully, be skeptical: the topmost branches are usually too skinny to hold weight, and we could never climb high enough to see anything except other trees. There were four or five trees that we visited regularly----tall beeches, easy to climb and comfortable to sit in.
It was in a tree, too, that our days of fooling around in the woods came to an end. By then some of us has reached seventh grade and had begun the rough ride of adolescence (青春期). In March, the month when we usually took to the woods again after winter, two friends and I set out to go exploring. We climbed a tree, and all of a sudden it occurred to all three of us at the same time that we really were rather big to be up in a tree. Soon there would be the spring dances on Friday evenings in the high school cafeteria.
29. The author and his fiends were often out in the woods to _______.
A. keep away from their parents B. play golf and other sports
C. avoid doing their schoolwork D. spend their free time
30. What can we infer from Paragraph 2?
A. The activities in the woods were well planned.
B. The author explored in the woods aimlessly.
C. Exploration should be a systematic activity.
D. Human history is not the result of exploration.
31. The underlined word "skeptical" in Paragraph 3 is closest in meaning to ______.
A. calm B. serious C. doubtful D. optimistic
32. How does the author feel about his childhood?
A. Long but unforgettable. B. Lonely but memorable.
C. Boring and meaningless. D. Happy but short.
D
It is believed that climbing can do good to health. Where can you learn the skill of climbing then? If you think that you have to go to the mountains to learn how to climb, you’re wrong. Many Americans are learning to climb in city gyms(体育馆). Here, people are learning on special climbing walls. The climbing wall goes straight up and has small holding places for hands and feet.
How do people climb the wall? To climb, you need special shoes and a harness(保护带)around your chest to hold you. There are ropes(绳索)tied to your harness. The ropes hold you in place so that you don’t fall. A beginner’s wall is usually about 15 feet high, and you climb straight up. There are small pieces of metal that stick out for you to stand on and hold on to. Sometimes it’s easy to see the new piece of metal. Sometimes, it’s not. The most difficult part is to control your fear. It’s normal for humans to be afraid of falling, so it’s difficult not to feel fear. But when you move away from the wall, the harness and the ropes hold you,and you begin to feel safe. You move slowly until you reach the top.
Climbing attracts people because it’s good exercise for almost everyone. You use your whole body, especially your arms and legs. This sport gives your body a complete workout. When you climb, both your mind and your body can become stronger.
33.The most difficult thing to do in wall climbing is .
A. to tie ropes to your harness B. to climb straight up
C. to move away from the wall D. to control your fear
34.The word “workout” underlined in the last paragraph most probably means .
A. settlement B. tiredness C. excitement D. exercise
35.Why does the author write this passage?
A. To introduce the sport of wall climbing.
B. To prove the basic need for climbing.
C. To encourage people to climb mountains.
D. To tell people where to find gyms.
